Put Down Your Dukes

The Washington Post
January 11, 2006
By Vicki Elmer

"...facing critics at work requires preparation with goals in mind, information gathered and emotions subdued. You do want to be emotionally neutral," said Ellen Ostrow, a psychologist and owner of Lawyers Life Coach in Silver Spring. Try to act respectful, not defensive, no matter how you feel.

When you're meeting with a tough critic, turn the session from confrontation to negotiation. "Get it from win-lose to win-win," she said. This may require a shift in tone and direction, by saying, "It's important to find a way that works for both of us."
